Horse Racing, Golf & Beyond... Sports fans are pretty creative when it comes to combining their favorite pastimes, such as the Trackmen Golf Club (TGC) that pairs up horse racing with golfing on some of the finest courses in Florida and New York. While the competitive side of the action on the tracks and the links is obviously a big draw, the social nature of clubs such as TGC is just as important to members, providing an instant community that comes together to enjoy similar pursuits and interests. Sports fans might root for different teams at times and have more than a little competitive desire within themselves to always finish first, but it’s also easy for them to find common ground with other fans, often forming friendships that last a lifetime.

While it might seem a world apart, the same is true at many online poker rooms and other online gaming sites. Weekly poker games are a very similar phenomenon, as while it’s true that everyone is typically trying their best to take all of their opponents’ money, it’s just as easy to remain friendly while doing it. Some critics choose to focus solely on the negative aspects and consequences of horse racing and playing poker (such as problem gamblers who aren’t able to set and maintain betting limits) and ignore all of the positive benefits of finding a like-minded community of friends. Lasting, lifelong friendships are proof positive that there are some very positive sides of sports as well, counterbalancing some of the negatives that tend to get more headlines and attention.

Golf, horse racing and poker also share a common thread in that they bring together people from all walks of life, many of whom might never have met if it wasn’t for the common bond of sports. Stop at any table during the World Series of Poker Main Event in Las Vegas and ask each player their life story and how they got there and you’re likely in for nine very, very different tales, each with their own twists and turns. Online satellite winners who turned a few dollars into their $10,000 entry are seated next to top poker pros, who in turn are sitting beside a plumber who saved money for decades in order to chase his poker dreams of playing in the biggest poker tournament in the world just one time.

Online poker sites in particular make bonding over the game easy, as major sites not only incorporate chat functionality but also tools to invite your offline friends to join you for a weekly game, as well as integration with social networking sites such as Facebook. Alerts let you know instantly when friends are also online, and table search functions can show you exactly where they’re already seated and playing, if you’d like to join the game as well. Many poker websites also sponsor weekly tournaments for groups such as TGC, even sometimes adding in extra prize money for weekly leagues as a way of encouraging social groups and other organizations to add poker into their regular mix of activities.
